The Day Of The Forests
Today is United Nations International Day of the Forests. This year it's celebrating forests and foods: the 'crucial roles of forests in food security, nutrition and livelihoods. In addition to providing food, fuel, income and employment, forests support soil fertility, protect water resources, and offer habitats for biodiversity, including vital pollinators. They are essential for the survival of forest-dependent communities, particularly Indigenous Peoples, and contribute to climate change mitigation by storing carbon.' A reminder if one were needed of the preciousness of our not so 'new' New Forest. At any season its sights alone are magnificent: bare branches in winter, dappled summer sunlight peeping between many shades of green or in all its autumnal glory. Even when foggy it has its magic!
Right now following yesterday's equinox it's officially spring - and the forest is bursting into life in all directions. And this morning at 10am as part of the New Forest Awakening Festival, you are invited to join National Park Authority Tree Officers Nik and James on the Tall Trees Trail at Rhinefield, looking at New Forest trees and how to identify them. They'll be explaining about trees native to the New Forest, as well as non-native species which have made our forest their home. Don your walking boots and go!
Also celebrating this day of the forests, Careys Manor is hosting a special World Forestry Day Guided New Forest Walk & Lunch.
It's a brief one from me this week. See the feature panels below for some special upcoming treats at Balmer Lawn Hotel and Rhinefield House, and check the Diary and also the full Events Calendar for all that's happening this weekend and next week.
See you next week, meanwhile Happy Weekends Everyone!
Best wishes Jane
