Living and Giving
'It's not the years in your life that count, but the life in your years.'
This quote, often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, is a timeless reminder to make the most of every moment, to focus on active, intentional, passionate, purposeful day to day living rather than the number of years lived.
Those words are often quoted too by the team at Oakhaven Hospice, bringing to life the very essence of how hospices contribute to their local communities by helping families make the most of every last moment, even as death approaches. And this week's theme is that whilst living our own lives to the full, we can at the same time give something precious, by leaving a legacy to our own local hospice which cares for residents in the New Forest, Totton and Waterside.
As this year's 'This is Hospice Care' campaign begins, the message from Catherine Bosworth at Hospice UK is stark, and underlines the precarious financial position of hospices:
“Gifts in wills are the lifeline keeping our hospices open. Every single hour, someone receives care that wouldn't exist without the generosity of people who choose to support hospice care in their will. That's the reality we're working with and it's becoming increasingly fragile, as funding pressures threaten hospice services, right when demand is rising. Our ageing population means demand for hospice care will only continue to grow, so it’s vital that we do what we can to secure hospice care now. A gift in your will to a hospice doesn’t require parting with your money today, anyone can leave a legacy. Gifts of any size can make a significant difference - it all helps hospices be there for people who need them.”

Giving... a Helping Hand
So first to confirm: the Lymington Seafood Festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary when on Friday 10 July a fabulous Coldplay tribute band will headline the evening's music, followed across the 3 day weekend by another 13 bands filling the air with blues, soul, Motown, ska, reggae, pop and indie classics.
Careys Manor Hotel will showcase its culinary excellences with a range of demonstrations on the Chef’s Stage and the second ‘Big Careys Cook Off’ where budding amateur chefs battle it out in front of a packed audience; the hotel's sponsorship and support will in turn help the organisers invest in new show attractions. Cambium Head Chef Dylan James will be creating a series of ‘mini masterclass videos’ offering his culinary tips, and there are plans to launch a special ‘festival menu’ in the weeks leading up to the event, showcasing some of the best local and seasonal seafood produce.
