Dynamic Universes: Playwriting Workshop with David Lane

This day-long workshop invites writers to gear themselves up with a variety of tools for invigorating their playwriting with imagination, searching for dynamic dramatic and theatrical potential in their ideas.

In the morning, taking the core principle of a play as its own little universe of forces, we’ll start at the outer reaches and work gradually inwards, exploring through discussion and practical exercises how each element of that universe might contribute to the overall architecture of your storytelling.

Uncover how structure, theme, language, setting, character, backstory, mythology, values, theatricality and much more can inform your choices and create exciting dramaturgical possibilities.

After lunch we’ll swap mini-playwriting exercises, look at some professional approaches to constructing theatrical worlds from research, and spend a little time exploring what an ideal writer’s space might include to help inform Forest Forge’s aim to build a bespoke home for playwrights.

An ideal workshop for writers with some experience at the beginning of a new idea, or looking to re-approach an existing piece of work through understanding it in a new way.

Each writer is invited to bring a short (5-min) teaser writing exercise to share with the rest of the group. This is an inaugural workshop session that we hope can form the basis of a future longer-term programme of support for writers in the area.
