Anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, agitated or unable to cope… Confusion, concentration problems and brain fug… Bad mood and feeling low and unmotivated… How we feel is not, it turns out, dictated just by our brains. In her free talk Dinah Smith explains how our mental health is ruled by the bacteria in our gut – and how simply restoring it to good health could give you back your emotional mojo.

You know that familiar feeling of butterflies in the stomach when you’re nervous? Well, researchers have found this is more than a transitory feeling: studies now show there’s a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the health of our gut and our mental state. The microbiome, our population of billions of tiny micro-organisms in our stomachs, is pivotal to our outlook on life – give it a boost and it could be the secret to feeling upbeat, focused and happy.

In one experiment with laboratory rats, reported in the medical journal Neuropsychopharmacologyin 2016, researchers noticed that the animals’ gut micro-organisms reduced when they were exposed to stressful experiences. Towards the end of the seven-week experiment the rats seemed to lose any feelings of pleasure and displayed ‘despair-like’ behaviour. Another group of rats started to display the same behaviour when the micro-organisms from the first set were placed in their gut.

Now research on humans proves this direct cause-and-effect pattern between gut health and mental health. Among the latest findings it has been discovered that

  • prebiotics can have anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects
  • taking probiotics can positively change the way the brain responds to the person’s environment
  • more than a third of depressed people have ‘leaky gut’, or permeability of the gut lining that allows bacteria to seep into the bloodstream.

There is plenty more research where that came from. In her free talk on the gut-brain connection Dinah Smith will explain how this vital relationship works, plus how you can positively influence your moods, concentration and emotions by looking after your microbiome.
