Barry Peckham: A Retrospective

Enjoy the work of one of the New Forest's best artists in this retrospective exhibition celebrating 50 years.

Exhibition finishes 28 October

A New Forest native, Barry paints in oils and watercolours and prefers to take his inspiration directly from the nature surrounding him.

Barry Peckham’s retrospective exhibition, celebrating 50 years of art was opened on Friday 14 September by the chairman of the New Forest Ninth Centenary Trust, Mary Montagu-Scott. The well attended preview brought together a number of well-known local artists as well as keen collectors of Barry’s work. This included Mary Montagu-Scott whose painting of pigs out on the Forest during the pannage season was given to her as a gift by Beaulieu villagers on the occasion of her 21st birthday.

Barry started his working life as a budding film maker, but quickly realised that his real passion and talent lay with painting. Barry was born locally at Ashurst and a number of his early works, including more ‘industrial’ paintings such as the building of the Itchen Bridge and experimental work using different techniques and materials, form part of the exhibition. They show the fascinating development of his artistic career from wide ranging subject matter to his favourite and better known depictions of the Forest and Solent coastline.

Barry along with other forest artists, continues to enjoy trips away to paint different parts of the country and to gain from painting in the company of other artists. In his opening speech he thanked all those who has supported his career as an artist, including his loyal and growing band of patrons, saying ‘It’s been a delight to have been able to make my living as an artist. To have been able to do so within the New Forest and to have been able to interpret its natural beauty for so many people over the decades is an honour’.

Today Lymington is an internationally famous yachting centre with a population of almost 17,500.
