Rotary Club of Lymington

Rotary Club of Lymington - a rather hidden gem of good - going on behind the scenes, yet also in the heart of our community!

The Rotary Club of Lymington is part of Rotary International, a world-wide association of local clubs for men and women in business or the professions, all of whom have one purpose in common - they have a desire to contribute something of value to their local community.  Their common ethos is “Service Above Self”, and that’s the driving philosophy behind the Rotary movement, working in local communities for benefit worldwide.

Rotary International

Rotary International was founded in 1905 and now has over 1.2 million members in more than 28,000 clubs in 200 countries. There are 1,800 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland with over 61,000 members.

The aims of Rotary are to:

  • Provide humanitarian service to the community at local, national and international level.
  • Encourage high ethical standards in all vocations.
  • Work for goodwill and peace in the world.

The Rotary Club of Lymington

The Rotary Club of Lymington was inaugurated in 1948 and currently has a membership of 51 business people (including 7 ladies - a growing proportion!) who are elected by personal invitation. Prospective members are encouraged to make several visits to the Club prior to receiving an invitation.

Rotarians meet weekly for lunch at the Lymington Community Centre, often followed by a talk given by a member or guest, on a subject which is always topical and relevant to the local community. Approximately once per quarter there is an evening meeting where Rotarians enjoy the company of friends and family.

The idea is that each member brings his or her various skills to the club, in order to benefit the community. Many members are recently retired professionals and business people who have an enormous combination of skills, experience and expertise to offer, and who also have, possibly for the first time ever, some spare time! Members enjoy the social aspects of meeting up with like minded individuals, as well as the opportunity to combine their knowledge and skills to the benefit of the community. It’s a simple formula, and it works.
