Churches moving with the times

Last Sunday I had the great pleasure of hearing Morning Service on Radio 4 – it was enormously calming and uplifting, and “My song is love unknown” with the old tune has to be my all time favourite hymn from childhood…

Meanwhile our own local churches have been busy, learning about Zoom and getting their services and meetings online.

And now, eerily empty church buildings have in fact become become "churches without walls": everybody is warmly invited to live streamed Easter services see below.

Just as we've rediscovered the joy of walking to the local village shops now providing a much needed and indeed quite essential service, so might we having not set foot in a real church for a long time appreciate the opportunity to join in one of these lovely services from a distance.

Lymington Baptist Church

Lymington Baptist Church began in 1688 in times when Baptist Christians were persecuted and had to meet in secret for being “non conformist” ie not part of the Church of England, so they met secretly in each others’ houses and apparently had to go to Hatchet Pond for baptisms!  https://www.lymingtonbaptist.org/who/our-story/

Today’s Lymington Baptist Church normally meets in a beautiful and historic building in New Street, has an extremely active membership and does an enormous amount to support various elements of our local community, from its CAP work (Christians Against Poverty) to its popular and incredibly successful Jobs Club which aims to help people who’ve for whatever reason fallen off the jobs ladder back onto it…and much more.  More to know about when it's open again!

The evolution of the lived streamed service from Lymington Baptist Church

With thanks to Abigail Harvey for the background:

"Three weeks ago, Lymington Baptist Church had to quickly adapt to the new “normal” following Government guidelines concerning their Sunday services.

The first week the advice was to have no large gatherings so with a team of 3 – Dave, the Pastor, his wife Louise and Will a musician - they live streamed the Sunday morning service via YouTube.

The second and third weeks, following lockdown, it was down to Dave and his wife Louise to master the technology and deliver the service.

Each week, the production is being refined and as a church family there’s something very special about sitting down at 10.30 “together” to engage in our Sunday service.  We have even set up Zoom “coffee” meetings following the service to replicate what usually happens on a Sunday when we’re gathered."

And now we're all invited!

The Church of England has posted further details of local live streaming churches on the website www.achurchnearyou.com/live-stream and individual churches have also posted information and links on their websites and social media channels.

However we celebrate a rather different Easter Sunday this Easter Weekend let's all try and find space for a little calm and peace which we surely need!
