Residents in Lymington's Court Lodge saddle up for horsey fun and games on Grand National Day

Last week's Grand National with a first ever lady jockey winner was an occasion for the history books. As it happens, residents and staff at Colten Care's Court Lodge in Lymington were ready for the off!

The excitement of the Grand National inspired them to saddle up for more horsey fun and games. So taken were they with the famous annual steeplechase they dressed up as jockeys and racegoers and set up their own equestrian-style games.

Looking on in the photo are resident Barbara Hughes and, dressed as a jockey, Companionship Team Member Cat Loubser sporting pink and black silks, white breeches and a black riding hat.

“It was such a lovely surprise to see the amazing little ponies with a jockey in tow,” said Barbara. “The ponies seemed to have larger-than-life personalities as they said hello to everyone and spread happiness all around. They clearly enjoyed the attention they received from us too. We were all laughing seeing them with Cat and we can’t wait for them to visit again when the weather is warmer.”

Fellow resident Paddie Agace was one of several winners of Grand National-themed games at the home including a friendly scratch card contest.

Paddie said: “We had a really lovely time and I was delighted with my win and the appearance of the miniature ponies.”

For the race itself, Court Lodge residents enjoyed bubbly and a spread of homemade canapes brought in by chef Hannah Clark.

They watched enthralled as Irish jockey Rachael Blackmore created history by becoming the first woman to win the Grand National, riding the 11-1 chance Minella Times.
