New Forest Colten Care home Kingfishers wins national award thanks to its amazing team

Ed Note: And the winner is... and Beata said it felt like slow motion and then became a truly unforgettable moment!

Team members at Kingfishers care home have seen off a challenge from dozens of homes across the country to scoop a prestigious industry accolade.

WINNERS. On stage with all this year’s National Care Award winners, are, seated first, second and third left respectively: Kim Gritt, Kingfishers Care Co-ordinator, Clinical Lead Zoe Mills and Home Manager Beata Brzozowska. Kingfishers won the Care Team of the Year category. Kingfishers, Colten Care’s twice Outstanding-rated New Milton home, has won the Care Team of the Year category at the National Care Awards.

The team was represented at the awards ceremony, held at the Hilton London Metropole, by Home Manager Beata Brzozowska, Clinical Lead Zoe Mills and Kim Gritt, Care Co-ordinator.

Beata said: “When they began saying, ‘And the winner is...’ it was like slow motion and then when they read out the full name of ‘Kingfishers care home’ it was a truly unforgettable moment.

“I had an overwhelming sense of pride rising up and happiness, thinking ‘we’ve done it’. It was incredible.”

Zoe said: “We were quietly confident beforehand but you don’t know how strong the competition is so you hope, but you can’t be overconfident.

“When we won, it was just amazing, especially after all the challenges of the past 18 months.

“It shows that anything is possible and it reflects so well on everyone in our team and their passion for the job. The award is for everyone. We were just the lucky ones there on the night to collect it.”

Asked why she believes Kingfishers won, Zoe added: “A positive mental attitude is part of our DNA and we ensured our entry reflected that.

“We also asked all staff to help us answer the questions on the nomination form so we could share what the whole team felt and explain how much pride everyone has in keeping the resident firmly at the heart of all that we do.”

– Staff celebrate the ten-out-of-ten rating for Kingfishers on the review site Carehome.co.uk earlier this autumn. The score puts it among the top 20 care homes in the south east. Kingfishers is already rated Outstanding by the Care Quality CommissionFollowing the win, residents at Kingfishers were quick to offer their congratulations.

Terry Brown said: “Absolutely, totally, utterly deserved. I am extraordinarily happy residing at Kingfishers. I think the team are a fantastic crew.”

Pearl Lyon added: “Congratulations to everyone. What brilliant news and incredibly well deserved.”

Congratulating the team on what he described as a ‘truly fantastic achievement’, Colten Care Chief Executive Mark Aitchison said: “This is a moment to be proud of. Kingfishers and all our other homes have delivered consistently high standards of care throughout the pandemic and the many challenges and adversities it has brought. Collectively this is what we do as one team to make a difference to the lives of our residents. It is heartening to have this independently recognised with a national award.”

Kingfishers was first rated Outstanding by industry regulator the Care Quality Commission in 2017.

The status was retained after a further inspection in December 2019, confirming its place among the elite of nursing homes in England.

Exceptional full marks on independent review site Carehome.co.uk

Kingfishers also has a ten-out-of-ten score on the independent review site Carehome.co.uk which rates thousands of UK care homes based on feedback posted by residents and relatives.

Now in their 23rd year, the National Care Awards are designed to ‘celebrate the very best people in the long-term care sector, highlighting excellence and rewarding those who work tirelessly to provide consistently outstanding care’.

A second Colten Care home, Braemar Lodge in Salisbury, was a finalist in the category for Dignity and Respect Care Home of the Year.
