Former golfer Elsie celebrates her 100 birthday with her grandsons

Former golfer Elsie Knopp teed off her 100th birthday celebrations in Lymington, with the help of her two grandsons from Milford on Sea.

Linden House resident Elsie Knopp celebrated her 100th birthday with grandsons Thomas, left and William Hetherington.

Elsie, a resident at Colten Care's Linden House in Lymington, was joined at the care home by William (25) and Thomas Hetherington (23) from Milford-on-Sea and a host of other family members and friends.

The party enjoyed Elsie's favourite meal of roast beef, followed by bread and butter pudding and of course birthday cake.

Elsie joked: "I don't feel 100. But then what is 100 supposed to feel like?  It's been a lovely party, with very good food, shared with my family."

Elsie was born in Ormskirk in West Lancashire in 1916 in a different time indeed!

Golfing well into her 80s

Elsie is a long-standing member of Droitwich Golf Club in Worcestershire, where female members still compete for the Elsie Knopp trophy, awarded in her honour, each year.

Elsie's daughter Patricia Hetherington, said: "Mum loved to play golf and was very good at it, playing until well into her 80s.

RNLI fund raising led to Queen’s garden party

"She was also chairman of the RNLI in Bromsgrove and helped to raise so much money for the charity that she was invited to one of the Queen's garden parties at Buckingham Palace."

Elsie moved to Hampshire 11 years ago and has been a resident of Colten Care’s Linden House since October 2015.

Mrs Hetherington added: "Mum is very happy here at Linden House and the party the staff have thrown for her birthday has been absolutely wonderful."

Anita Irvine, Home Manager at Linden House, said: "It's been lovely to welcome Elsie's family today and to look at all the lovely photographs they have brought in from her long and very active life."
