New Forest East Boldre village shop and post office

It's got to be August as East Boldre hits the national headlines

New Forest ponies to attack shoppers in New Forest village?

east boldre village hall potential shop aug20 CopyAs reported in the Telegraph (yes the Telegraph!!) plans for the new East Boldre community hub have hit a hurdle with the Verderers, who are concerned that customers could be attacked by hungry ponies seeking food. "The area is much used by stock. We are very concerned that the interaction between shop customers and the ponies is potentially fraught with danger."

As pointed out in the rather more local Echo "planning applications are often met with weird and wonderful objections from locals who will stop at nothing to block development in their own backyards."

However in this case locals are fully in support of an innovative and forward thinking scheme which could not only save the village shop but also create a real hub for the community for decades to come.

And to boot, the committed team behind the scheme have also worked hard at all times to make sure they consult with the many local bodies involved.

Local MP Julian Lewis is in support and so is Lord Montagu of Beaulieu.

Lord Montagu's letter to the NPA says: "East Boldre is a rural community with an ageing population and only a twice-weekly bus service which makes the small village shop and post office a lifeline for many."

Referring to the coronavirus pandemic a villager points out: " The (existing) shop has been an essential service selling food and provisions. Without it many people would have to go without or travel. Public transport links in East Boldre are very poor and many rely on the shop for food and the post office."

Background to the application

The Community Hub project aims to enhance and expand the existing East Boldre Village Hall facilities (historic building, previous Officers Mess for the World War 1 Airfield, more recently scene for many fascinating local history displays and even aerial demonstrations as well as venue for local produce markets, exercise classes, talks and pantomimes!) while safeguarding the Village Shop and Post Office (epicentre of the shocking December 2018 East Boldre Tornado).

The team is working closely with the owner of the current shop which he has for many years been trying to sell, to ensure a solution which suits both him and the community.
