Editorial Introduction September 2021: On Radio 4 recently, Professor Atul Shah drew on his background as a Jain to argue that in the complexity of today we need a healthier relationship with finance. (If you'd like to listen to him it's good, click here!) As a general subject this is pertinent to us all; for business people particularly Sandeep Sesodia of MGPS Commercial has some wise words.
“Finance is a very sensitive subject and a lack of knowledge leads to ignorance and maybe fear. However, this has been replaced by a desire to learn about it given all the scandals recently and the economic downturns.People do research online and are becoming more and more aware and astute. However, with the myriad of financial institutions and advisers etc and their tempting offers, uncertainty and confusion does creep in, so, as Professor Shah says, trust is critical.
Financial education was lacking but the good news is that over the years it has increased massively – especially at senior schools. As part of the schools careers programmes banks such as NatWest have provided programmes such as Face2Face with Finance and Money Sense – I was involved in the programme for many years. The Careers and Enterprise Co (CEC) through the Local Enterprise Partnerships also provide education to school children by inviting the relevant institutions. As an Enterprise Adviser with the CEC and as a school Governor I know how active an area this is.
Nevertheless, as a (western certainly) society we are driven by a culture of materialism – the capitalism and laissez faire approach – Gordon Gekko “greed is good”! But this has crept into thinking throughout the world. This approach has tainted people’s morals, ethics, principles and aspirations. People do want everything right now – on a plate! The “good money culture” still needs to be worked on. This will take time as since the late 1950s when Harold MacMillan made his (in)famous “you’ve never had it so good” speech, we have become a consumer driven “disposable” society – if something stops working you simply throw it away and buy a new item e.g. the growth of the Bic Biro and other plastic pens replacing ink pens etc. There is so much over production of all items and there is so much choice that it causes confusion and an unhealthy, materialistic desire spurred on by attractive finance options.
Let's aim to strike a balance, and achieve business success in a way which is mindful and sensitive and will be better for us and for the planet."
