Introducing Jane's very own newly acquired small but perfectly formed holiday home in the French Alps at Samoëns - where we've been visiting for more years than I can count and which is a perfect jewel of a holiday destination, both winter for ski and summer for a myriad of activities. To contribute to the costs of owning it we shall be renting it out privately for certain weeks of the year as below.
It's a lovely winter/summer self catering west facing holiday apartment in Alpine village Samoëns - a traditional village full of history and charm in the Grand Massif ski area, France (1 hour drive Geneva Airport).
Available for private holiday rentals Christmas, New Year and February, in the Summer Holidays and for out of main season spring/summer/autumn weeks too.
The apartment sleeps 4 very comfortably in two bedrooms each with single beds which clip together to make kingsize beds, and up to 6 incorporating the large, comfortable double sofabed in the living room.
Altogether the spacious convivial living area, the lovely views and outdoors space, and the convenience for skiing and other mountain sports in winter, and hiking, cycling and river sports in summer, make this apartment a real gem - on the edge of a jewel of a mountain village with oodles of charm, lots of excellent shops, good restaurants and a lovely ambience which feels welcoming and warm to families, couples and friends alike.
The Samoëns ski resort is part of the Grand Massif ski area which also includes the resorts of Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. The Grand Massif is the fourth largest ski area in France, with more than 265 km of slopes, offering everything from great beginner facilities including a good choice of excellent ski schools, to challenging blacks and fabulous off piste ski areas too.
"Samoëns is a breath of fresh mountain air. The French proudly describe it as one of their monuments historiques, that just happens to be attached to a great ski area. An hour by car from Geneva, this ancient village, famed for its stonemasons, is part of the Grand Massif ski domain and is connected to high-altitude, snowsure Flaine." Source and more praise here!
From putting on your boots and collecting your skis from your secure ski locker just down the stairs from the apartment it's literally 2 minutes walk past the ski hire shop and the fantastic Tiffany bakery (which serves the local area with freshly baked bread and pastries), to the Samoëns lift station.
From here the "Grand Massif Express" whisks you swiftly up to Samoëns 1600 from where you can ski the resort slopes or connect to the whole of the Grand Massif area within a few minutes on a fast chairlift.
Also from the "GME" you can catch a bus to all the local villages including directly to Morillon ski station which can be very convenient in inclement weather, the main Morillon slopes are in the trees and you can ski in almost all conditions there.
Ski schools: we personally recommend Ecole de Ski 360 and would be happy to give you a personal introduction to the fantastic team who run it.
In summer there's fabulous valley and mountain hiking (900 km of hiking trails!), biking, swimming and a plethora of other sports on the doorstep.
Samoëns "base de loisirs" leisure centre with popular and excellent terrace restaurant, swimming pool, tennis courts and much more is 5 minutes walk from the apartment, as is the lovely Lac aux Dames to which the leisure centre is adjacent and around which a stroll at any time of day or moonlit night gazing at views of mountains on all sides of the wide valley is an immense pleasure. (Also around the lake and along the Giffre river walk towards Morillon is lots of "natural" play equipment which is great for fitness training or simply to keep the energetic amused and entertained on family walks.)
The leisure centre which in summer is open every day also offers a large children's play area and an enormous sports fields (football, basketball) for teenagers. Activities are offered throughout the summer: tennis (rental and courses), adventure course, outdoor pool (slide, 3 pools), paragliding, bowling.
Just an hour’s drive from Geneva airport and 8 hours drive from the French Channel ports, Samoëns is one of the most accessible winter and summer holiday destinations in the Alps. It's not essential to have a car at the apartment because everything is within walking distance; Go Massif offers a range of transfer options.
Plenty is written elsewhere about the beautiful village of Samoëns and you can take a look here at the resort website; in its wide valley setting with mountains on either side but in no way oppressive or dominant, visually its proud backdrop is the stunning 2,207 metres Aouille ("needle" in local dialect) du Criou. About the Criou.
The centre of Samoëns is traffic free, with a very old square including lots of history and culture to explore at your leisure, dominated by a magnificent lime tree. The main street offers everything you need for self catering with a couple of small supermarkets open until late in the evening, and gourmet shops offering mountain ham, local cheese and mouth-watering pâtisserie. Every Wednesday a large market sells local produce. It's also a wonderful place for browsing, buying gifts and possibly investing for your own home too in the Savoyard interior designer shops.
Literally "in the footsteps of the wolf", Apartments Pas au Loup are located just 5 minutes level walk from the village centre and literally two minutes walk from the main Grand Massif express telecabine; on the way to which you'll find a large ski hire shop which makes hiring your equipment tremendously straightforward, plus an excellent pizzeria and the fabulous "Tiffanie" boulangerie where on the premises the bread, pastries including local specialities are baked to serve the whole of the local area.
In the "aerial" view (taken from the GME) Pas au Loup Apartments can be seen on the far left. For a view from "our" side see the photo at the top of this page.
The park, lake and leisure centre are just 200 metres pleasant walk past the campsite parallel with the Giffre valley.
It's a truly lovely location whilst being totally practical too - just off the main roundabout on the way in to the village so very convenient for driving and not getting caught up in any central village traffic jams, yet with rural west facing outlook it's also a really quiet and beautiful spot!
Apt A5 is a west facing ground floor apartment with a generous living/dining/kitchen area giving access to a good sized west facing terrace and spacious communal gardens beyond; the apartment has two bedrooms, a bathroom with basin and bath with shower over, and a separate WC with hand basin. The washing machine is also in this room.
The well proportioned open plan kitchen, dining and living space make it relaxed and convivial for families and groups of friends. Both the kitchen/dining/living area and the main bedroom have a fabulous westerly outlook over the private terrace and gardens towards the beautiful Giffre valley beyond.
The apartment has underfloor heating, the well equipped kitchen is newly fitted with Bosch/Siemens appliances. There's plenty of crockery and cutlery and there's a cooker including full size oven (rare in apartments like this) as well as a microwave. It is worth noting that the undercounter fridge is not large and the freezer compartment is small - but shopping in the wonderful foodshops on a regular basis is part of the pleasure of staying in Samoëns. And there's plenty of storage for your own provisions.
The apartment is good for couples, friends and families because of both the living area layout and the flexible sleeping arrangements. Both the bedrooms have kingsize beds which separate to singles, plus there's a quality comfy double sofabed in the living room. Bedroom one with doors onto the terrace also has a wardrobe and both bedrooms have under bed storage, bedroom two has a useful 6 drawer unit and both rooms have plenty of hooks, but please note the bedrooms are not large and storage capacity is for the kit you need for a holiday only!
Outside on the private terrace there are table and chairs for alfresco summer dining.
There’s also a private ski locker and a small underground garage where you can keep your car (NB average size family car ok) snow free and/or bikes secure.
This is our own holiday home so we are not on hand to help out, but we’re available by email and phone at all times and our English and incredibly helpful concierge/key-holder lives in the chalet next door.
Abi, Feb 2018: "As a family we spent February half term here and it was totally fantastic! The apartment is located opposite the ski hire shop and you cannot get nearer to the ski lift! Samoëns town is a few minutes walk and is a delightful place to eat, drink and shop! The apartment is brilliant! Everything you need, spacious, cozy and comfortable. Private patio with views up the mountains and really peaceful. I cannot find one fault with the accommodation at all - new kitchen, comfy beds and a totally workable and easy space for a family of four or a group of friends. I cannot recommend this place enough. Just perfect!"
Melanie, July 2018: "This place is fantastic! The apartment matches the photos completely and is very well equipped for a family stay. The kitchen appliances are all new and in great condition. The location is ideal for summer and winter - only a short walk from the Base de Loisirs with two beautiful lakes, child play area (climbing frames etc), basketball court and loads of walks. The Grand Massif ski lift is just across road as is the delicious boulangerie Tiffanie. We had an absolutely superb stay and would definitely come back."
