Art for Art's Sake
'Art for art's sake', or 'l'art pour l'art', is a philosophical idea that the value of art lies in its own aesthetic qualities and should not be judged by its usefulness or moral content. This concept emphasises the intrinsic value of art, independent of any social, political, or moral agenda.
Now I can't stop singing the chorus of the classic 10CC song in my head!
Anyway, next week artists across the whole of Hampshire will be showcasing their huge variety of art in local galleries, village halls and pubs, in their own studios and even their own homes, as part of Hampshire Open Studios.
New Forest Marque Inspired is the new category of the New Forest Marque which was recently established to include artists and craftspeople living, working, selling and 'inspired by' the beauty of the New Forest. At the New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst, members will be presenting their paintings, ceramics, lino prints, map art, wildlife art, photography, glass and jewellery. This specially curated exhibition, which will continue until 14 September, endorses the New Forest Marque ethos of supporting small local businesses and thus the economy of our special New Forest landscape.
Other local artists exhibiting include Artists for Oakhaven in Boldre, and Chalk's Gallery in Lymington. And in East Boldre Lizzy May will be showing colourful oil paintings of recent travels (see above) plus landscapes inspired by the New Forest and coloured pencil drawings of cattle grazing on the Solent foreshore and native ponies in their natural habitat. Prints and greeting cards are also available.

Enjoy the shows!
The above photo was taken during the finale of a recent performance of The Rivals, by the brilliant West End company of New Forest Open Air Theatre (previously London Touring Players), celebrating the 250th anniversary of Sheridan's comic masterpiece. Complete with all the malapropisms uttered by Mrs Malaprop herself it is absolutely hilarious. If you can spare an evening between now and Monday 25 August (Bank Holiday Monday), pack up your low back chairs and picnics and get to Furzey Gardens - for the best viewing positions, by 6pm when the gates open!
A rather fun-sounding date for your children's diaries has been added this week to our Events Calendar: for Saturday 20 September and the Walhampton Children's Triathlon which is open to all children in Years 2-8. There's a fun team triathlon with a variety of distances to choose from, and an individual timed triathlon for Years 5-8.
And for the adults, on Saturday 13 September New Forest Academy of Dance will be providing an 'energising and expressive' Contemporary Dance Workshop to which all are welcome - no dance experience necessary but places are limited, so take the plunge and book now!
Meanwhile you can literally plunge in to this weekend's Big Event on Sunday: the Family Fun Day in aid of the RNLI, at Lymington Sea Water Baths. What a perfect place to spend a hot sunny day!
A reminder too that this year's New Forest Food Festival takes place tomorrow and Sunday, at Hinton Admiral. And there's more live music at the Turfcutters: tonight the Ed Martin Duo and Sunday afternoon The Strange Blues Band. A summer afternoon in the lovely Turfs garden, sipping your drink, chatting and enjoying the chilled vibes while all the children have fun in the suitably distant play area, takes some beating.
Have brilliant weekends everyone!
Best wishes Jane
