Doing Good, Closer to Home

You may have started seeing the B Corp logo appearing on more and more products and businesses lately. But what does it actually mean?

B Corp certification is awarded to businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. In short, they are companies that are genuinely committed to doing good, not just doing well.

As a proud B Corp, New Forest Escapes' all-local team puts sustainability at the core of everything they do as an independent luxury holiday cottage rental business. 

Since earning their B Corp certification in March 2022, they have been committed to doing business the right way, and their commitment shows. They scored an impressive 95.7 points in their B Corp Impact Assessment, well above the 80 point threshold required for certification. New Forest Escapes has been committed to doing business the right way, from the cottage owners they work with and the suppliers they choose, to the causes closest to their heart.

In practice, that commitment looks like this. New Forest Escapes is an accredited Living Wage employer, ensuring every member of their team is paid fairly. They actively support local charities and community causes, including the New Forest National Park and local wildlife organisations. Property owners are encouraged to adopt greener practices too, and Owner Guides for Greener Homes have been created, which cover why sustainability matters, how to set up and run properties more responsibly, and a Quick Wins list for owners. This includes tips on using natural cleaning products, composting, gardening for biodiversity and educating guests about the local environment.

At New Forest Escapes, waste is taken seriously. After discovering that a third of their office emissions came from just one black bag and one recycling bag, the team set about making changes. As food waste accounts for 40 per cent of all local black bag waste, composting became a natural priority for the team, helping keep nutrients on site and reducing the impact on the soil.

Increasing recycling across their properties is also a priority, with the team trialling new guest signage that gently encourages responsible waste habits without compromising the guest experience. The goal is simple: to share what works, learn from what does not, and help other holiday home owners do the same.

BCorp certification is a rigorous process to achieve and an even bigger commitment to maintain, but for businesses like New Forest Escapes, it reflects a genuine belief that tourism can be a force for good.
