Psychosis - Paranoia - Delusion: How does it affect you, having a loved one who
suffers? How do you manage?

Unless you experience this, you won’t know. It’s horribly difficult accessing
adequate support for vulnerable adults who live with enduring mental ill-health. It’s
horrible for the sufferers, and impossibly hard for their families, whose own mental
health can be badly affected. The mixed emotions resulting from not being able to
get the necessary long-term support for loved ones – frustration, worry, anxiety,
anger, guilt, sympathy, sadness, exasperation, hope, and many more – can be hard
to manage, and sometimes they all come together in a volcanic explosion, which
isn’t helpful for anyone.

Carers’ ability to cope with everyday life, including being able to be there for their
unwell loved ones, can have a very heavy toll financially, and holding down a job
can be an added challenge. And the effect on close family members that are also
living with the impact, often results in them having their own mental health issues.
Families and carers struggle to be able to look after themselves and their needs, let
alone the extremely challenging needs of their loved ones.
But unless you live with this, you won’t be aware of it.

To raise general awareness of these difficulties, and to raise funds for local charity
Hammersley Homes, some brave (and a bit bonkers) carers, parents and family
members are abseiling over 100 metres down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth
over the weekend of 21-22 June. Serious Mental Illness is an illness that dominates
the lives of whole families, when one person suffers. Parents worry always about
who will care for their loved one, when they are no longer able to. It's the same
with any disability, and until you live with this in your family, you don’t know.

Hammersley Homes is a New Forest based charity that was established to fill this
gap in public services, to provide long-term support for life, offering safety and
companionship to vulnerable adults who live with enduring serious mental ill-health
– and some comfort to their families in the knowledge that their loved ones won’t
be abandoned.

Money raised through this abseiling challenge will be used to support more of the
vulnerable adults with whom the charity works, and reduce waiting lists for their
service. All their clients are referred by local Community Mental Health Teams,
and Hammersley Homes can’t keep up with the ever-increasing demand for their
Outreach Service.
