The past few months have been challenging for care home residents and their families, everywhere. Lockdown meant an immediate cessation of face-to-face visits at the very time relatives desperately wanted to support their loved ones. Thanks to early planning Colten Care with brilliantly capable and caring staff has managed the brunt of the crisis and also provided clear and consistent communications throughout which helped everybody to keep calm. Now whilst hugs and kisses are still of course not possible, a safe visiting protocol across the 21 Colten Care homes is enabling real life reunions; families are responding with their own votes of confidence.

Sue Pritchard’s husband Bryan lives at Colten Care’s Kingfishers care home in New Milton, rated Outstanding in successive inspections by care sector regulator the Care Quality Commission.
Like families across the country, the couple found it hard to accept the loss of visiting opportunities due to lockdown. For three months they relied on phone calls and Skype. That was until the introduction of Covid safe visits involving a specially designed see-through screen positioned in the home’s entrance way. Sue was one of the first relatives to take advantage of the new protocol. “It was wonderful,” she says. “We have been married for 44 years and have never been apart for this length of time. It was a thrill to be with him again, very exciting. We chatted away quite happily and it’s reassuring that we can look forward to the next one. Of course it has been an upsetting time but the safe visit protocol is marvellous. These meetings are so important.”
Sue feels the home’s overall handling of the Covid crisis has reinforced her view that Bryan is in safe hands. “I am reassured about the home being a safe haven. That comes from the regular communications and updates we receive which are open and transparent. The reassurance came early. They were absolutely onto any initial questions about, for example, PPE, food supplies, GPs’ visits and hospital discharge – all the things you would be thinking about as a relative. And we are always encouraged to respond if we have any questions. I feel listened to.”
It has been a similar experience for Nick Amor whose mother Evelyn has lived at Colten Care’s Castle View home in Dorchester for just over three years. Like Sue, Nick was overjoyed to hear of the safe visit protocol. “I had been visiting three times a week,” he recalls. “It was sad I couldn’t see mum because of lockdown. It has been so lovely to see her again. We’ve now done the second visit. We hadn’t seen each other for so long. She looked well, she’s clearly eating well, and she was glad to see me.”
Nick is full of praise for the way Castle View has dealt with and communicated about its handling of the Covid risk. “They’ve done an excellent job, outstanding. There have been no cases of the virus at the home. The staff couldn’t have done any more. I can’t fault them at all.”
Families newer to Colten Care have likewise been impressed with its approach. Janice Perkins’ mother Terry only moved to the Lymington home Belmore Lodge at the end of January 2020.
“I’m an ex-nurse and so was on the look-out for anything amiss but it was all fine,” says Janice. “Since then, I’ve continued to be completely reassured. I was going in most days before lockdown. Mum found the separation very difficult to start with. Since then, it’s been fine. While it has been nice weather she has been able to go out into the garden. She loves to be outside. It has made a great difference to her. Phone calls and Skype have been very helpful too, and now we have been able to have our first shielded visit. I was able to see that she looks good.”
Janice says any concerns she had about the wider media portrayal of care homes during the pandemic have been allayed by regular communications from Belmore Lodge and Colten Care generally. “We get all the information we need and if you have any queries, they get sorted straight away. I would certainly recommend Belmore Lodge to others. From my perspective I am happy with it. I appreciate the staff. They are doing brilliantly.”

Covid-19 and Lockdown have restricted face-to-face visits at care homes everywhere but thanks to effective planning and clear communications, Colten Care has kept relatives reassured, and relatives have been praising the carers.
Read this week's advertisement feature here; then below we feature Colten Care's annual Celebration of Life, when relatives and residents share memories of loved ones who have passed away at Colten Care's homes in the past year - this year this took place, naturally, online!

Meanwhile, Colten Care’s annual Celebration of Life is usually an opportunity for relatives, friends, current residents and staff to get together in person and reminisce about those who have died.
With Covid restrictions ruling out face-to-face community gatherings this year, team members decided to hold an alternative-style event.
They invited families and friends of the residents to join online meetings and share personal memories and time for reflection.
The intimate event featured poems, music, hymns, readings and prayers. In some homes, local vicars conducted services via Zoom.
Participants were encouraged to write about their loved ones in short email messages. Staff transcribed these onto memory cards which they tied to ‘memory trees’ in the homes’ foyers and gardens.
There were many affectionate and personal contributions such as: “Isobel – a wonderful wife and lover of music”; “Norma – loved sitting in the sunshine”; “Betty – had a wonderful motherly nature”; and “Jessie – loved travelling the world playing sports”.
Pictured here is part of the event which took place at Linden House specialist dementia care home in Lymington.
Celebrations across the homes included staff and current residents hand-painting pebbles in memory of those they have lost, with the resident's name, along with a picture depicting their hobbies or interests; the pebbles were then laid in what will now become a permanent ‘Forget-me-not’ garden and people can come and sit on a bench opposite taking time to reflect as they look at the stones.
Vanda Baker, Home Manager at St Catherines View, dedicated dementia care home in Winchester, said: “Although we couldn’t meet in person with families this year, we still wanted to give everyone the opportunity to reflect and reminisce. As the name suggests, Celebration of Life is all about remembering the individuality of residents we have had the privilege of knowing. It is an ideal chance to celebrate the joy, laughter and experiences of those who came to stay with us.”
Sally Smith, Nurse Learning and Development Manager, who leads Colten Care’s end-of-life care strategy said: “Covid has created a really difficult time for many people and families across the world. For our part, we didn’t want the restrictions to stop our annual Celebration of Life event which has been held every year since 2017. It always proves to be a precious and heartfelt experience for those taking part. We strongly believe that good end of life care should extend to supporting relatives and friends whose loved ones have died.”

Relatives really appreciate the care received by their loved ones in Colten Care homes. Linda Carrington's mother Pearl is 96 and has lived at Kingfishers in New Milton (rated Outstanding by the Quality Care Commission) for 3 years. Covid was a shock as it was to everybody but the key thing is how Colten have more than managed, calmly and competently.
As Linda says: "Mum got over a low point about the pandemic and now she's fine, emotionally restored. She has said that life hasn't changed much during lockdown, other than definitely missing visitors. I wonder where else, at the moment, people could say that."
It's really worth reading what else Linda has to say below.

Caring for a loved one can be demanding and stressful, both emotionally and physically. We all deserve an occasional break from our responsibilities – and that’s where a respite stay in a beautiful, welcoming care home comes in. You may well associate care homes with long-term care, but there are many reasons why shorter stays are attractive as well.
People on discharge from hospital often require additional care to start their recuperation. Meanwhile some individuals or families want to try out a care home before making a longer-term commitment to move in permenantly.
A respite stay can be a rejuvenating breather that gives a full-time carer precious time out. Enjoy your holiday knowing that your loved one is having a great time too! You should not feel guilty about needing a break from the person you’re caring for. In fact, it’s widely recognised that respite care is good for both the carer and the person being cared for.
Colten Care are making an amazing offer this summer of 2 weeks free at their homes, so why not take advantage of it, you can feel reassured you will both have a really good break.

Keeping residents safe, happy and fulfilled is Colten Care's main goal as they navigate the challenges of Covid. The full words from the article below are also reprinted beneath for easier reading.

Keeping our residents safe, happy and fulfilled is our main goal as we navigate the challenges of Covid. It has meant tough decisions about visiting, admissions and physical distancing coupled with imaginative approaches to staging events and activities. Guided at all times by our professional nursing expertise, the measures we have taken are designed to ensure our homes remain safe havens. Here, three families discuss their reasons for reassurance.
Tracey Tarrant praises what she describes as a ‘very high standard of professionalism’ among the team caring for her mother Molly at Bourne View in Poole.
“I would definitely recommend Bourne View to others, 100%. The staff set it apart. They are truly caring, loving people who treat your family member as if they were their family member. We have nothing but praise for the proactive and thoughtful actions taken.
“It is a worrying time for everybody, and people everywhere are trying to get their heads around the severity of it all, but we have as much peace of mind as it’s possible to muster knowing mum is receiving excellent care in a comfortable, safe environment.
“Colten has maintained a strict protocol on admissions and visits all the way through, been proactive in sourcing PPE, and avoided risks while staying true to its very high standards of care and professionalism.
“Some of what I have seen in the national media has made me angry, so many providers have been put in a difficult position. It’s an indictment of government rather than care homes. That is absolutely not the case at Colten. I don’t see that they have staffing or funding issues. In normal times Bourne View minimises its use of agency staff and this policy has helped tremendously during the pandemic. They are continually looking at procedures and managing it.”

Families of residents at Colten Care’s Outstanding-rated New Forest home, Woodpeckers, have also spoken of their reassurance. Among them is Jean Keevil, daughter of resident Helen, who has lived at the home for more than four years.
Jean recalls the moment she first visited Woodpeckers when she was initially looking for a care home. “I walked in and thought ‘This is it, she’s home’. It was the greeting, the room. You get a feeling about a place. I didn’t really know what I was looking for but I knew I had found it. I was not impressed with other non-Colten homes. Some were too large for mum. At Woodpeckers, it’s the set-up and friendliness.”
According to Jean, the home’s strengths have simply been amplified during the pandemic. “They are doing the best they can under very difficult circumstances and communicating very well. What sets this home apart is that the staff remains the same, there is a very low rate of staff turnover. That is a great plus.”
It is a similar experience for families of residents at the Sherborne care home Abbey View. “I have always been very reassured,” says Tim Spurry, whose mother Daphne is a resident. “She is comfortable and well cared for. It is very much the right place for her. The staffing ratio is very important and Abbey View is well staffed.”
Discussing Covid specifically, Tim says: “My impression is that the home is truly a safe haven. That’s all down to the professionalism and dedication of the whole team, not only the nurses and carers but everyone involved. They are doing an excellent job.”
While each Colten Care home has its own character, one common factor is that all 21 homes are registered to provide nursing care. For relatives such as Tracey, Jean and Tim, this is another essential piece of reassurance.
Jean says: “I’m so glad Woodpeckers is registered for nursing so if mum’s needs do change she doesn’t have to move somewhere else. I didn’t appreciate the availability of nursing at first but it’s important to know it’s there down the line if you need it.”
Tracey agrees, adding: “I didn’t want to be in the position of having to move mum if her needs changed so having nursing on hand is a way of future-proofing the situation.”
And Tim adds: “It’s vital to be registered for nursing. The last thing you want is somewhere where your loved one can’t be nursed.”

Not to be outdone by the slightly better known recent Lymington Seafood Festival, residents at Belmore Lodge in Lymington had a whale of a time staging their own marine-themed festival, which by their own admission became a "different kettle of fish"!
The fun included sampling an array of seafood dishes, enjoying ocean-related stories and photo presentations, and even going on a virtual tour of a lighthouse.
Staff and residents created the in-home experience after Covid restrictions meant they couldn’t attend the nearby Lymington Seafood Festival in person.
Companionship Team Leader May Butcher said: “We were all disappointed that we couldn’t take a residents’ group out to the main community event. So instead, we decided to ‘turn the tide’ on our setback and bring the sea festival-vibe here to Belmore.
“In the end, it turned out brilliantly. Our residents helped us as we dressed our lounge with starfish decorations, seashells and fishing nets, our chef prepared a tasty selection of delicious seafood to try and we shared in lots of sea-related stories and poems.”
On the menu were seafood platters and dishes including sushi, seaweed, salmon, tuna, prawns, crab and various pates and mousses.
The virtual tour focused on Hurst Point Lighthouse which has helped guide vessels through the western Solent along the coast from Lymington for more than 200 years.
There were also screenings of the popular whale drama Free Willy and a National Geographic documentary about our oceans.
Belmore Lodge resident Mary Young (pictured) said: “I was delighted to help with the planning of our festival and on the food side we all enjoyed the wonderful flavours of the sea – the prawn crackers were especially more-ish.”

Professional and committed care home staff have won praise for their dedication and skill in keeping residents and families safe and reassured during the pandemic. One of the factors that sets Colten Care apart from other providers is that all its 21 homes are registered for nursing and benefit from a group-wide support structure. Here, three families share their reasons for confidence.
Peter Wardle’s 87-year-old elder brother Jack has been living at Colten Care’s Avon Cliff care home in Bournemouth since September 2017. Previously he had lived alone in an upstairs flat in Surrey with no lift. After a hospital stay and an unsatisfactory home care experience, the family decided Jack would be better off in a quality care home closer to Peter and his wife. Avon Cliff, just ten minutes from where they live, has proved ideal. “In the three years he has been there, he has thrived,” says Peter. “It’s a combination of good food and care, and not having to worry about cold callers, gas bills and so on.”
Before lockdown, Peter would visit Jack regularly. While the pandemic has been a challenge, it has confirmed his view that Jack is in exactly the right place. Peter recalls: “We explained to him we wouldn’t be able to go in so often. It was mid-March. He watches the news and was understanding. He knew the situation. One of the reassuring things for us is that we know the staff will look after him. Everything he wants is there if he chooses to have it. I am reassured that Avon Cliff is a safe haven from the pandemic. I would be pulling my hair out if he was living on his own in his flat. Avon Cliff is as safe as anywhere can be.”
Peter also praises the tone and level of communication that the family have received from Colten Care since Covid began affecting every walk of life. It includes regular emails from both the Chief Executive Mark Aitchison and the team at Avon Cliff. “It’s fair and clear,” says Peter. “Just what you need for reassurance. It reinforces my feeling that we couldn’t have picked a better place for Jack. The model of people living at home is not the right one. A care home with nursing is best. It’s given him more independence, not less.”
Peter’s sentiments are shared by fellow Colten relative Jenny Cottrell, whose mother Rosemary lives at Outstanding-rated Newstone House in Sturminster Newton. Jenny says: “I know I will be informed straight away if there is anything my siblings and I need to know about our mother. At the same time, it’s incredibly reassuring to hear direct from the CEO about things like testing and procuring PPE, and then, at the home level, how companionship and activities are continuing. We feel very lucky that our mother is where she is. Not everyone is fortunate to have the Colten experience but I think it is a model we should all be striving towards.”
Jenny also compliments the way Colten staff have been able to reintroduce safe visiting for relatives through see-through screens positioned in the 21 homes’ entrance ways. “I had been going in two or three times a week before lockdown and we were both delighted and excited to be seeing each other again. There was a pang of emotion that you can’t have a big hug because that’s what you want to do and that’s what the residents need but the screen worked well and it was absolutely delightful. It’s a sign that things are getting better. Elderly people should be seeing friends and family in their twilight years.”
Former nurse Helen Clark is another relative who has taken advantage of the safe visit protocol. She had been missing face-to-face contact with her dad Jack, a resident at the Poole dementia care home The Aldbury, since March. “I had been ‘beamed in’ on a big TV screen before, which was amusing for dad, but I was so excited when I heard about the safe visiting. I knew I wouldn’t be able to touch him but I couldn’t wait to see him and know he was happy. I’m so grateful and feel very privileged.”
Helen says The Aldbury team are doing a ‘fantastic job’, adding: “I have total reassurance. When it’s my turn, I’ll be putting my name down for Colten Care. They were actually recommended to us by someone who runs a care home locally, and not a Colten one! As I have a nursing background I am aware of how hard care work is, I understand that, and nursing-wise everyone at The Aldbury is amazing.”
