Remember, remember, the 5th of November
Bonfire Night firework displays in the New Forest in early November
Remember, remember, the 5th of November - gunfire, treason and plot!
Remember, remember, the 5th of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, 'twas his intent
To blow up the King and the Parliament
Three score barrels of powder below
Poor old England to overthrow
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match
Holler boys, holler boys, let the bells ring
Holler boys, holler boys
God save the King!
'Guy Fawkes' Night is a traditional British celebration that commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Traditional celebratory food included 'parkin cake' made up of treacle, ginger, syrup and oatmeal.
In living memory what became known as 'Bonfire' Night was celebrated in the gardens of friends and neighbours, and after the Guy had gone down in flames we sipped tomato soup from mugs and ate potatoes which had been baked in the embers of the fire.
Nowadays both setting fire to a 'Guy' and noisy fireworks have become less acceptable - especially when they go off night after night, startling, disturbing and even scaring pets and people.
And these days large community firework displays are considered the best way to celebrate, with candy floss and hot chocolate.
So wrap up warm, find your boots and your torches, and gather with family and friends to watch some spectacular displays taking place in the New Forest.
