Over the past decade, Patrick's Patch, the vibrant and productive fruit and vegetable garden at Fairweather’s Garden Centre, Beaulieu, has been a hub of learning and growth for thousands of school children, community groups, and volunteers. This unique educational garden has welcomed over 5,100 school children and 1,100 people from community groups over the last decade, each leaving with a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and the joys of gardening.
Since its opening, Patrick’s Patch has been free for members of the public to explore. Families, children, and gardening enthusiasts have enjoyed wandering through the garden, following educational trails, and drawing inspiration from the beautiful and productive environment. The garden has served as a welcoming space for all, fostering a love for nature and sustainable gardening practices.
One of the highlights of Patrick’s Patch is the Potting Shed Club, where children can learn about gardening while getting hands-on experience in the Patch. This club allows young gardeners to engage directly with the natural world, using natural products and sustainable practices to grow their own plants. It has become a beloved part of the community, inspiring children to develop a lifelong love for gardening and the environment.
In the last ten years, Patrick’s Patch has astoundingly grown over 4000 lettuces, along with a wide variety of other fruits and vegetables, all tended to by our dedicated team of volunteers. Not only has the garden flourished under their care. All have been zero miles wheelbarrowed directly to Steff's Kitchen, where it has been transformed into the wonderful meals that have delighted our visitors.
Volunteer leader sought to take over from Rachel
Rachel, the driving force behind Patrick's Patch, has been at the heart of this success. Her passion for gardening and education has touched countless lives, and her leadership has made Patrick’s Patch a cherished part of the Beaulieu community. After a glorious 10 years, Rachel has decided it is time to hang up her fork and pass on the trowel to someone new.
Are you up for the challenge? If you have a passion for gardening and a desire to continue the legacy of Patrick’s Patch, we want to hear from you. This is a unique opportunity to lead a beloved community resource and inspire the next generation of gardeners.
