Ten Years Old and Maturing In Fine Style
There seem to be anniversaries everywhere at the moment! Lots of people I know are celebrating impressive numbers of years of wedded contentment, which is lovely.
And this week we raise a glass to Cambium: the flagship restaurant at Careys Manor Hotel, which which first opened its doors ten years ago this autumn. I recall the excitement on opening night...the newly unveiled interior and fabulous decor, not to mention the tasty treats and paired wines being served. Shortly afterwards my husband and I also appreciated the cleverly private tables and sumptuous seating when we treated ourselves for our own wedding anniversary to a memorably delicious dinner. (Especially I remember Michael, the expert and enthusiastic sommelier who first introduced us to, and explained the slightly salty taste of, the then still relatively unknown Albariño white wine. In the 10 years since it's become ubiquitous!)
The story of Cambium's last ten years is told with reference to its celebrated chefs and dishes over the years: click here to read A Decade at Cambium: Forest Flavours, Celebrated Tables, and Sincere Hospitality!
Whilst talking about Careys Manor, also to mention that until 15 October you can get 10% Off at SenSpa. If you've never yet ventured into this wonderful award-winning restorative haven of tranquillity, it's a great opportunity to treat yourself!
For nearly twenty years I'd been meaning to visit the now almost fifty (yes 50!) years old Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy. I finally made it this week in beautiful autumn sunshine to its fabulous site on the open New Forest near Bransgore. It is a truly remarkable place, where 25 horses of various types, sizes and ages are vital facilitators, helping to provide transferable knowledge and skills to young people with special educational needs, who through caring for these wonderful creatures are learning both how to live independently and how to get a good job and thrive in the world of work. What a story!
Upcoming Events
The Life of the Fields is the new exhibition at St Barbe Museum & Art Gallery. It's a fascinating showcase of the countryside and the forces that have shaped it over more than a century, including important works on loan from Tate, the Royal Academy, Towner, Royal West of England Academy, Government Art Collection, Museum of English Rural Life and private collections.
If you haven't yet seen it, next Wednesday evening's Private View hosted by the Lymington Society would be a perfect opportunity to do so. Refreshments will be served from 6.30pm and you'll be in company with lovely people with a glass of wine in hand - what's not to like!
I've been asked also to tell you about the upcoming Lymington Hospital Friends Open Evening on Wednesday 15 October. This promises a most interesting and informative session which will explain how Lymington Hospital Friends charity is working to improve patient care and wellbeing for Lymington Hospital patients. It's also your chance to see Lymington’s amazing modern range of facilities, many of which have been purchased with donations from the Friends. Maximum capacity is 100; tickets are free but you do need to book.
Diary events added this week include:
- Tuesdays in termtime: Stretch, Strengthen and Sculpt Dance Class
- 8 October (next Wednesday): South Baddesley School and Nursery Open Day
- 9 October (next Thursday): Wine Tasting 'Vive le Vin!' at Pebble Beach
- 13 November: Wine Tasting 'Vineyards of the Sun' at Pebble Beach
- 27-29 November: Christmas Tree Festival 2025 - and bookings for trees have opened!
- 4 December: Christmas Wine Tasting at Pebble Beach
I'm not going to mention any outdoor events for this weekend because it looks like Storm Amy might put paid to them. Força's Preloved Clothing Sale (today and tomorrow) is indoors though at 28 Queen Street - see link for map.
Hold on to your hats, batten down the hatches, and have a good one!
Best wishes Jane
